3D tissue models: research applications

Human 3D tissue models are available for a variety of tissues and can be used in a number of research applications. Examples include:

Skin pigmentation

When cultivated at the air-liquid interface in a chemically defined medium, normal human keratinocytes cultured in the presence of melanocytes produce a 3-D reconstructed human pigmented epidermis. These models may be used to assess the ability of chemicals, raw materials and final product formulations to modulate skin pigmentation.

The tissue models are dosed with the test product. After the treatment, all tissues are scored visually. Additionally, some tissues may be assessed for histology (H&E staining), tissue viability (via MTT assay) and melanin quantification.
